The Last of Us Episode 9 Is in Look For the Light
Titled Look For the Light, The Last of Us Episode 9 sees a pregnant Anna placing her trust in Marlene and, later, Joel and Ellie stepping closer towards the end of their journey. The Last of Us Episode 9 reveals something crucial about Ellie’s past and introduces us to her mother, Anna. Thereby, a massive brutal showdown happens as Joel and Ellie come across Marlene, but their much-awaited and unexpected encounter doesn’t go as expected. We will collect the pieces from where the episode started.
The Last of Us episode 9 begins with Ellie’s mother, Anna, who runs hard to escape and save her unborn child Ellie from the infected. But because she is pregnant, she can’t hide enough in a house easily accessible by the infected. Determined to save her daughter, Anna stabs a knife at the infected as it reaches the room.
Although she fails to save herself from being bitten by the attacker, she manages well to ensure the child she just gave birth to remains uninfected. She worries about Ellie and rushes to cut her umbilical cord as it could have infected her. Anna did her job well, though. And despite Anna and Ellie sharing the same situation briefly, a miraculous moment results in Ellie developing immunity to the cordyceps after her immune system responds differently to the infection. So, this is the bottom line of Ellie’s immunity to the infection spread worldwide.
Now, that’s another thing that we are not satisfied by the explanation the HBO series gave us in the finale. However, that’s not the only thing we are unsatisfied with. There is much more in The Last of Us episode 9 that went unexpected. Firstly, what’s something special in Ellie’s brain that makes her immune to the cordyceps? If she had something in her genes that saved her from the infection, Anna could not as well be saved. Anyways, it’s only now, The Last of Us season 2, which can answer our questions. Anyways, moving on, do you want to know what happened with Ellies’ mother, Anna?
She is stuck in the house; she has her newly born Ellie in her hands and is awaiting help. Luckily, Ellie’s friend Marlene and the fireflies’ soldiers arrive at the abandoned house. Anna asks her friend Marlene to take Ellie with her and handover her over to someone who can raise her well. After that, Anna makes one last plea to Marlene and requests her to shoot her as she is infected and doesn’t want to harm anyone after she turns into an evil monster. Anna, who is in continuous denial initially, shoots her best friend eventually and takes Ellie with her.
Joel and Ellie Encounters Anna in The Last of Us Episode 9
We have come over the flashback moments and again jump back to Joel and Ellie. Joel, who has grown concerned for Ellie, offers to return to Jackson and forget about the whole damn thing, as he doesn’t want her to get harmed in any way. But Ellie, who doesn’t want to give up easily, says- After all we’ve been through, everything we have done. It can’t be for nothing. She tells him – When we are done. We’ll go wherever you want. I’ll follow you anywhere you go.
Joel and Ellie travel again, and finally, after walking miles on the journey, they reach the fireflies and encounter Marlene. Marlene is the leader of the fireflies and has got Joel and Ellie to the fireflies’ encampment. And while the soldiers have taken Ellie to run some tests on her, they have knocked Joel unconscious. So, after Joel wakes up in the encampment, he inquires about Ellie Marlene and asks her to take him to Ellie.
But Marlene is not ready for any charity. Being the fireflies leader, she wants to save the world from the infection that spread years ago. And there is no way to do that than to seek Ellie’s help as she is immune from the outbreak. She explains to Joel Ellies’ being prepped for the surgery. Our doctor thinks the cordyceps has grown in Ellie’s brain since birth. It produces a kind of chemical messenger. It makes normal cordyceps think she’s cordyceps, which is why she’s immune. The doctors will remove it from here, multiply it in the labs and produce those chemical messengers to give to everyone to protect themselves from the infection.
But because this procedure requires brain surgery on Ellie, which can even result in her death, Joel suggests they do it with someone else. But pretty well, Joel and Marlene know it cannot be anyone else than Ellie who can help get a cure for the infection. The grumpy man now fights back to save her adopted daughter by shooting everyone, including the doctors, the soldiers, and Marlene, who refuses to obstacle the process.
But Joel being Joel, he least cares about anything. He is not here for mercy. All he cares about is Ellie, and he eventually takes her out of the hospital. However, that was something other than what Ellie would have wanted Joel to do. And after she wakes up and asks Joel what exactly happened after the fireflies soldiers attacked them, Joel explains to her that more people like you at the hospital were immune.
So the doctors were running some tests on everyone, including you, but doctors could not make the tests work and thus stopped looking for the cure. Thereby some raiders arrived at the Fireflies, and he had no option but to take her from the situation. But Ellie grows suspicious about Joel’s answer. The duo heads to Jackson, and in the final moments of The Last of Us, episode 9, Ellie asks Joel to swear on her that whatever he has told about the Fireflies’ story is true. Joel says- I swear.
That’s it. That’s where we get closure to Joel and Ellie’s journey. So, The Last of Us leaves many puzzling pieces behind to solve ahead. Since Joel has lied everything about Fireflies to Ellie, it will be interesting to see how Ellie finds out the truth and what turns Joel and Ellie’s equation takes after the revelation. And, will Ellie ever be able to cure people of the infection? We must wait for season 2 to answer our questions certainly. Till then, bye-bye, Joel and Ellie.
