Ryan Reynolds Deadpool 3 Filming Continues Amidst the Ongoing WGA Strike

Ryan Reynolds Deadpool 3 will no longer be able to improvise under the Writers Guild of America. The much-awaited Deadpool 3 of Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is facing the protest of creative writers delaying the production of the film. Actor Ryan Reynolds plays the titular antagonist in the film, named Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool. Ryan has been considered as a writer on the franchise since 2016. He has made changes before in the script during the shoot of the prequels of the movie.

Reynolds the producer of the film, has the right to make some specific changes in the script. Under the WGA rules, producers can go for “casual minor adjustments in dialogue or narration made prior to or during the period of principal photography.”

If not abided by the rules in the WGA guidelines, the actor can be expelled from the association itself. The WGA has asked producers and directors to avoid altering the written material during the strike to prove their support. It is estimated that the production might be delayed for a little bit longer as there are chances that SAG-AFTRA is likely to go on strike in June end.

How Will the Writer’s Strike Impact Deadpool’s Portrayal in the Film?

Details about this are not revealed by the makers. However, it will definitely be different from the past portrayal of Wade Wilson’s (Deadpool) character. It is also said that Ryan Reynolds not improvising the character and the script might not affect the film on the whole as the film is primarily focused on the character of Wolverine, played by Hugh Jackman.

Wade Wilson, aka Deadpool, is a witty mercenary with accelerated healing but serious scarring all over his body. He underwent an experimental regenerative mutation to treat diseases such as terminal cancer.

Ryan Reynolds has improvised his dialogues and made some changes in the script in the prequels. Reynolds gets involved in the filming, given that he’s the producer and writer of the film. He recently explained in an interview with ET Canada saying:-

“We’ve wanted this for decades… it’s weirdly the perfect time. I never stopped (trying to get him to come back as Wolverine). I was just pestering him like a gnat over the last many years. I believe in timing as much as hard work and luck and all those intersections that are supposed to meet. Timing’s the big one. I think he was ready. I think he was excited.”

What Will be the Writer’s Strike Impact on Deadpool 3 Production?

According to the WGA guidelines, actor and producer Ryan Reynolds is not permitted to improvise or make any alterations to the scenes and story. Ryan Reynolds is one of the credited writers of the film and a Writers Guild of America member. Therefore, it is a compulsion for him to follow the WGA guidelines.

The writer’s strike and the association have suggested that the actors and producers should refrain from modifying in writing of the film. However, Ryan Reynolds as a producer may make certain modifications to the language and narration of the film, as per the WGA guidelines.

The writer’s strike emerged in early May 2023, and the Marvel Studio stated that the filming would be unaffected by the strike, other than the fact that Ryan Reynolds would not be able to contribute to the film’s writing during the shoot of the film as he did with the previous prequels. Marvel Studios are currently shooting what they can by making writing adjustments during the film’s already scheduled reshoots.

It is said that Marvel Studios is managing to complete the action set pieces and other smaller details of the film production in the meantime. However, due to this ongoing strike, reshoots for the film may take place.

What are the Writers Demanding?

The writers are demanding creative rights, fair compensation, and improved working conditions. The writer’s strike is also asking for a bigger portion of the revenue generation of the projects. According to the agreement between the WGA and Marvel Studio, the screenplay and writing of the film cannot be updated or created, which is delaying the overall production of the film.

Any words from the team?

The Deadpool comic book creator Rob Liefeld took it to social media and wrote, “Also, just FYI – this is WAY more of a Wolverine movie,” which signifies that we can hope for Hugh Jackman’s portrayal as Wolverine in the film, unlike the previous prequels. The main plot of the film is still not disclosed. However, we can expect a violent and hilarious Deadpool film.
