Greta Gerwig’s Barbie Creates History! Becomes the Director’s First Film to Gross $1 Billion Globally

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie creates history at Box Offices and becomes the director’s first film to gross $1 billion globally. Having made its place at the $1 billion club, it seems like the Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling starrer has finally won the Barbenheimer trend, running for many days from now.

Ever since its’ theatrical release on July 21st, the pink-coated film Barbie broke records one after another. After hitting the big screens, Barbie turned the first film from a woman director to collect $155 million in its opening weekend.

Seeing a massive crowd dressed in the cinema halls, Greta Gerwig continued letting the audience experience Barbie in theatres. While the initial two weekends helped the film make dual figures of its budget, estimated at $145 million, it’s mainly the third weekend with which Greta Gerwig’s Barbie emerged victorious.

Having grossed $1 billion worldwide within 17 days, Barbie also became the fastest film in the history of Hollywood to touch the $1 billion mark in such a short period. Earlier, it was the 2011 film Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2, which held this record of being the fastest movie to gross $1 Billion in a short period of 19 days. But now Barbie has that record.

That’s not it, but there are more records Greta Gerwig’s Barbie made this year. Collecting $1 billion worldwide, Barbie has also become the 8th film from Warner Bros to enter the billion-dollar club. And, interestingly after the CoViD-19 outbreak, Barbie is the sixth that achieved this milestone. The five more movies which made $1 billion in the post-pandemic era are Spiderman: No Way Home (2021), Top Gun: Maverick (2022), Jurassic World: Dominion (2022), The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2022) and Avatar: The Way of Water (2022).

Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, going strong at the box office, has generated $74 million in the third session from 20,335 screens in 69 overseas markets. The team is immensely proud and overwhelmed with the love they are receiving from the pink audience.

In a recent conversation, Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy, the Co-Chairs and CEO of Warner Bros Motion Picture Group, shared their merriment on the successful collection of Barbie. They said, “A massive achievement like this is possible when you have an incredible filmmaking team, with cast and crew coming together to create a truly special moviegoing experience. Along with our partners at Mattel, and with the support of the entire Warner Bros. Discovery family, we are thrilled that audiences the world over are embracing the Barbie movie in such a profound way.”

They continued, “With Barbie becoming the biggest film at the summer box office, Greta now joins an elite group of writers/directors whose singular vision has generated $1 billion at the global box office, a milestone that is a testament to her brilliance and to her commitment to delivering a movie that Barbie fans of every age want to see on the big screen.”

The achievement is boosting ways for more female filmmakers to come forward and make great cinema as the world is evolving at a fast pace. Have you watched Barbie yet? Tell us in the comments below.
