Barbie Movie Review: Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling Giggles the Room With Their Humor and Punches!

Barbie movie is now here to have you meet your favourite doll Barbie on the pink screens. However, she is not the one who you thought of being. This Barbie is different. She is not always smiling but is annoyed and broken too. She knows to throw some punches as well when someone mocks her for who she is. Margot Robbie plays Barbie in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie movie.

Ken, who is a paramour of Barbie, is only happy when he is with his girlfriend, but he is also a little stereotypical. In the Barbieland, he has no existence without Barbie and seeks a close relationship with her until and unless he is exposed to the patriarchal system of the real world, leading him to make his #Kendom.

Barbie movie featuring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling in lead roles has many more characters to introduce in the feminist film. Most of them are just the alternate version of Barbie, a political, doctor, lawyer, and even outcast. And then there are too many Kens who know nothing than dancing around their dolls.

All these pink world partners are happy in their La La land until the stereotypical Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, faces an existential crisis. She wakes up daily and realizes she can no longer walk on her toes. She is now flat feet and is experiencing multiple emotions like anger, sadness, and confusion, which is unusual for any Barbie in Barbie land.

To seek answers to her questions, she visits a local outcast, i.e., Weird Barbie, played by Kate McKinnon. Through her research and knowledge, she discovers that her owner has somewhat wrongly played her in the real world.

Weird Barbie then gives her a choice between returning to her regular life or discovering the truth behind her existential crisis. Without taking a moment, she answers the first one, but Weird Barbie, in denial, sends her to choose again and visit the real world.

As she drives out from her imaginary world, her paramour Ken joins her for the adventurous journey. Passing through roads, sea, and space, Ken and Barbie finally land in Venice Beach, California. And while they think of seeking their answers easily, their estranged behaviour and funny antics drive the attention of the Mattle CEO, who orders his team to get the Barbie back in the box.

A surprised and equally shocked Ken and Barbie escapes everyone’s eyes, and they manage to meet Barbie’s owner Gloria essayed by America Ferrera, and her daughter Sasha played by Ariana Greenblatt. Gloria’s fondness for Barbie remains the same, but it’s her daughter Sasha who is upset with Barbie for building such unrealistic standards of beauty and perfection.

But Barbie being her focus, finally discovers that it’s the Mattel employee Gloria whose emotions led her to face an existential crisis. On the one side, Barbie seeks her answers; on the other side, her love interest Ken on his self-discovery journey discovers that in the real world, men have a higher place than women. He plans to impose this patriarchal system in Barbieland and flees to the imaginary place.

Now, when Barbie with her owners Gloria and Sasha arrives, her Barbieland turned Kendom, she sets out to bring back her world to the pre-Kendom situation. What takes place next is a rollercoaster which you all must experience in theatres. This is Greta Gerwig’s modern take on feminism, so I’ll prevent spoiling its climax here.

Verdict

Barbie movie is a perfect blend of action, emotion, and a doll story which is entirely different from what we usually think when we hear the word Barbie. It is one of the most unique Barbie stories I can ever imagine. The imaginary world of the world, knowing it delusional, still looks much more real and makes me think, ok, that’s what Barbies do; that’s how they walk and vice versa.

The opening scene of Barbie Indeed is a tour of Wonderland, but as soon as Barbie mentions thinking about death, the whole story takes a next-level turn. It takes us to her journey of womanhood while also discovering some harrowing reality of the patriarchal system in the real world.

Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are the triumph card of Barbie movie who serves justice to their characters. Their expressions, dialogues, and humour are unmatchable. Their impeccable acting skills prove they were meant to play the stereotypical Barbie and so as Ken. Ryan’s equation with Simu Liu was also enjoyable enough. Meanwhile, Weird Barbie is hilarious, and Gloria, played by America Ferrera, is noticeable in her role.

However, there is no denying that it’s Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling who outshined everyone in the frame. Except for the slow climax, Barbie’s movie did exceptionally well in all aspects and is worth watching in cinemas.

So, hurry up, girls, get your tickets now! And meanwhile, if you have watched the film by now, share your experience in the comments below.
